Wind conditions and season Why Aruba blows almost every day, how the breeze moves through the hours, and what the wind year actually looks like.

Most places have windy days and calm days. Aruba has a wind, singular, that is nearly always present, arrives out of the east and northeast, varies between pleasant and serious, and takes a proper holiday only a handful of times a year.

Aruba wind conditions are not a hazard that occasionally appears. They are the frame every day on the water sits inside, and they are predictable enough to plan around.

This page is the reference: where the wind comes from, how it moves through a day and a year, and what it does to a small boat with a person sitting in it.

01 / Mechanism

Why the wind never stops

Weather, for most visitors, is an event. Something arrives, does its business and leaves. Aruba's wind is not an event. It is a permanent feature of where the island sits.

A large area of high pressure sits semi permanently over the north Atlantic, and air spirals clockwise out of it. By the time that flow curves down to about twelve and a half degrees north, where Aruba lies, it has become a steady easterly with thousands of miles of open ocean behind it and no land in the way. Nothing has to trigger it, so it arrives most days, all year, and the direction barely moves. Expect it out of the east northeast on the great majority of mornings, swinging a little more southerly when the belt weakens late in the year.

The island gives you very little to hide behind. Aruba is low, the highest ground under two hundred meters, so there is no mountain casting a wind shadow. Shelter on the leeward side comes from the angle of the coastline and from the reef offshore, not from elevation, so the calm water here is a long band rather than a pocket, and parts of that band stop being calm when the wind shifts.

Nobody here asks whether it will be windy. They ask how windy, and at what hour.

You can read the whole system in the trees. The watapana, the divi divi that appears on every postcard of the island, grows permanently combed over toward the southwest because the trades have leaned on it since it was a seedling, and every one of them leans the same way. They are a decades long average of the wind direction, growing in the ground.

02 / The day

How a day builds

The difference between dawn and mid afternoon on the same day is usually larger than the difference between two consecutive days. Paddlers who understand nothing else about this island's wind can still have a good time if they understand that.

Two things are happening at once. Underneath sits the trade wind, which changes slowly. On top of it, from mid morning onward, the land heats faster than the water around it and starts pulling air in off the sea. That thermal circulation runs in roughly the same direction as the trades, so the two add together rather than cancel out. The result is the curve every watersports crew here organizes their working life around: soft at first light, building through the morning, strongest in the middle and later part of the afternoon, then easing as the land cools.

The shape of the curve matters more than its exact numbers. In the windy half of the year the usable window can close before mid morning and the water goes from inviting to hard work inside an hour, while in the calm half it holds into the middle of the day. Evening is the underrated end of it, since the breeze fades as the land cools, though that softening is less reliable than the morning calm and you are working against a closing window rather than an opening one.

The mistake almost everyone makes

Judging the day from the beach over breakfast. What you are looking at is the bottom of the curve, and the water you will be paddling home across is somewhere up the slope.

03 / The year

The year, month by month

The seasonal pattern is a lean rather than a switch. The trades strengthen and weaken as the Atlantic high shifts north and south with the sun, and the swing is wide enough to change what kind of day is realistic on the water.

Broadly, the wind builds around the turn of the year, holds firm through the dry first quarter, and reaches its strongest average through late spring and early summer. It eases through late summer, and the lightest air usually arrives in the autumn, which is also the wettest and most humid part of the calendar. For the tell rather than the theory, look at where the island's competitive windsurfing and kitesurfing calendar clusters. It has always sat around the turn of June into July, and events like that are not scheduled where the wind is unreliable.

A month is a distribution rather than a promise, and everything below is tendency across many years. Useful for choosing when to come, useless for deciding whether to launch on a particular morning. For that, look at the water.

July Strong Still firm, with occasional softer spells late in the month. Same discipline as June. The dust haze can take the edge off the light and the heat.
August Moderate to fresh Easing. Longer calm mornings, more humid air, occasional flat spells. The first month where a mid morning start is often still comfortable.
September Moderate Frequently soft, sometimes glassy for days at a time, hot and heavy. Peak tropical wave season. The wind can vanish and return from an odd quarter.
October Light to moderate Usually the calmest water of the year, with rain showers arriving. The longest usable windows on the calendar. Watch for squalls rather than trades.
November Light to moderate Still soft on average, wetter, with short heavy showers. Calm mornings are common. Visibility under the boat suffers after heavy rain.
December Moderate to fresh Rebuilding through the month, firm again by the end of it. The strengthening around the turn of the year is well known here and it is real.

The short answers

Windiest stretch: late spring into early summer, with the whole first half of the year running firm. Calmest stretch: the autumn, roughly September through November, with October usually the softest. Calmest hour of any day: the first part of daylight, in every month. Does it ever stop: yes, for a morning here and there in the calm season, and almost never for a whole day in the windy one.

04 / Reading it

Reading it without a forecast

Forecasts are worth checking and worth distrusting in equal measure, since models handle this island poorly at short range. The sea breeze component is local and the terrain is too low to be represented properly. What does not lie is the surface of the water, and the reliable signal there is whitecaps, which appear at a fairly consistent wind strength and so work as a rough instrument you can carry in your eyes.

Moored boats swing to point into the wind, so a line of them gives you direction instantly, and palms exaggerate strength because they move in almost nothing. The least reliable place to judge any of it is a sheltered beach, since the shore creates a lull over the first stretch of water. Read the water a few hundred meters out instead.

05 / Geometry

Why the number is half the story

Two paddlers can read the same forecast and have completely different days. The number describes air speed. What decides whether the water is paddleable is what that air has been allowed to do to the sea before it reaches you.

Fetch is the first factor. Wind needs distance over open water to build waves. Behind the reef on the sheltered coast there may be only a few hundred meters of water upwind of you, so a fresh breeze makes short chop a kayak crosses without drama. On the windward shore the same breeze has crossed thousands of miles of ocean and makes a genuine sea. Identical wind, entirely different water, a few kilometers apart.

Angle is the second. The leeward coastline runs northwest to southeast and the trades come from the east northeast, so along much of the sheltered side the wind crosses land or runs along the shore rather than blowing onto it. That geometry is the shelter. When the wind backs into the southeast, which happens more often late in the year, a launch that has been calm all week becomes noticeably more exposed with no change in wind speed at all.

Local acceleration is the third. Air speeds up around headlands and squeezes through gaps, so corners and the openings between bays are reliably windier than the water either side of them. A useful habit

Before launching, work out where the wind would carry you if you stopped paddling, and whether that is somewhere you could land. On the sheltered coast it is usually another beach further along. Where it is open water, stay in.

06 / The boat

What wind does to a kayak

A sit on top kayak is a light hull with a large obstruction on top of it, and that obstruction is you. Torso, head, hat and raised paddle all catch air, so in a fresh breeze the boat is pushed about as much as it is paddled.

The numbers are unforgiving. A relaxed adult paddler on flat water moves at something like two and a half to three knots. A fifteen knot headwind takes a large fraction of that away, and somewhere above twenty knots on the nose an average paddler stops making useful ground at all. The paddle keeps moving and the shoreline does not. That is the mechanism behind the trap every visitor here eventually hears about: the leg out with the wind behind is a gift, and the leg home is the bill for it.

Drift while you rest is the part people underestimate. A kayak with nobody paddling moves downwind at roughly a knot in a decent breeze, so a few minutes stopped for water or a photograph can cost several hundred meters of hard won ground. The loss is invisible while it happens, because the boat feels perfectly still.

  • Do the hard leg first. Paddle into the wind while you are fresh and let it carry you home when you are not. It feels wrong and it is right.
  • Set a turnaround before you launch. A landmark, not a feeling. Feelings generated downwind are unreliable.
  • Angle rather than fight. Quartering into wind and chop is less exhausting than taking it head on, even though the line is longer, and a low quick stroke gives the breeze less to push against than a high dramatic one.

07 / Exceptions

Squalls, waves and odd weeks

Direct hits from tropical systems are rare this far south, and in any case a named storm is the wrong scale for a paddler to worry about, because what changes a day on this water is far smaller than that.

The common disruptor is a tropical wave passing during the second half of the year, and what it does to the wind is more interesting than what it does to the rain. The trades often collapse ahead of one, giving a still, heavy, gray morning that can be the calmest water of the entire year. Then the wind returns, sometimes from an unusual direction, sometimes with an unfamiliar swell arriving on a coast that is normally flat. Those glassy mornings are also the ones where it is easiest to go too far, because nothing is pushing back and the calm may not hold for the return.

Squalls matter more than their size suggests. They are compact, they arrive as a dark wall with rain under it, and they can push the wind up sharply for a short period. On an island this low you can watch one cross the water toward you with plenty of warning, so glancing upwind every few minutes is a cheap habit with an excellent return.

Nothing here is a rule of the road

None of this is presented as law or regulation. It is how the water on this island tends to behave and what experienced people do about it. Conditions on any given morning are yours to judge, and the only reliable instrument is the water in front of you.

08 / Planning

Planning around it

All of that comes down to a handful of choices, and they are the same choices whether you are launching your own boat or going out with somebody who does this for a living.

  • Take the early water. Nothing makes the morning special beyond the wind, but the bottom of the daily curve is the one thing you can count on in every month of the year.
  • Choose the coast to suit the wind rather than the other way round. The sheltered southeast holds its calm longest and has the most to look at under the boat. When the trades are up, moving further southeast usually beats setting off earlier still.
  • Keep the plan loose across your trip. If you have several days on the island, do not fix the paddling to one of them. Watch the water each morning and take the calm one.
  • Judge the return, not the departure. Every wind decision here is really a decision about the leg home. If the answer to what happens when you cannot paddle back is anything other than a comfortable landing somewhere, change the plan before you launch.
